KYC wins gold at the RHYC Lilac Regatta!
(May 24-25, 2025)
At the annual Royal Hamilton Yacht Club (RHYC) Lilac Regatta held this past weekend, KYC was represented by the sister duo of Nikola and Anna Powick racing in the club 420 class. They were coached at the event by KYC’s very own Jonah Fy.
The first day of racing proved to be a chilly, breezy day with wind coming out of the west of Hamilton's harbor. After one general recall, the 19 boats started the day’s racing. Wind ranged from 10-20 knots on the Saturday. Our Kingston sailors showed their speed and boat handling especially when the gusts hit and managed to score five bullets (firsts).
On Sunday, the sun appeared along with some shifty breeze from the west’Ish”. It was definitely a “keep your head out of the boat” kind of day. Wind ranged from around 7-20 knots which led to some exciting crash tacks, unintentional swims in the water (especially by the crews), capsizes and general spinnaker mayhem. Nikola and Anna held their own, recovering from -amongst other things- 2 capsizes! In the end, they earned 1st, 2nd, 6th and then 1st.
After 8 races, Nikola and Anna won the gold (8 points). Silver went to a team from Queen’s City Yacht Club (25 points) and bronze to a team from Royal Hamilton Yacht Club (27 points).
As the first event of the season, it was a big team effort led by Head Instructor Mansell and race coaches Jonah and Owen (as well as many others behind the scenes) to get the sailors and all the gear ready. Special thanks to all involved in our KYC team as well as RHYC for running an excellent event.
This competition was the first event in the Ontario Sailing Grand Prix for the 420 fleet. Other regattas held as part of this Grand Prix circuit are Four Sisters (Port Credit Yacht Club, July 19-20) and the Fall CORK Regatta September 13-14). The 420 race team will also host a regatta in early July at KYC and will compete at the Youth Nationals held at CORK August 2-5.
