This past weekend, Pointe Claire Yacht Club (PCYC) was host to the 2025 Shark Coupe de Quebec Shark Regatta. It was well attended with 20 Sharks coming from Niagara on the Lake, Toronto, Whitby, Belleville, Hull, Montreal and finally two boats from KYC.
Shanti and Jonathan Livingston Seagull pulled their boats after Thursday night's race and headed down to Pointe-Claire Yacht Club Friday afternoon.
Once there, PCYC had hotdogs and hamburgers for the competitors and all were able to catch up with new and old friends with their favourite beverage.
Saturday started with a full on breakfast put on by PCYC staff which was a nice surprise as we didn't have to travel outside the club for breakfast. Same was provided on Sunday morning!
Skippers Meeting was at 0930 Saturday morning and racing was scheduled to start at 1100. Winds being cooperative the RC managed to get in three races. Winds were from the NE veering to ESE in the last race. Wind strengths were at the top end of our 180 genoas and gradually tapered down to 3- 5 knot winds with really patchy winds blowing across Lake St. Louis. The currant in this lake comes from two different rivers. Ottawa and St Lawrence. One being dark brown in colour from the Ottawa River and the other, greener and clearer in colour from the St Lawrence River. Both currants played a big part in doing well in the races. We just dropped our current stick close to the mark and timed the drift of the stick moving away from each mark. What we found was, the Ottawa River was stronger than the St Lawrence River which contradicted our notes from previous years sailing Lake St Louis.
So, we knew going into the north shore was probably the best bet to doing well and it paid off in all three races. Jonathan Livingston Seagull, with Josh Wilby, Matt Fair and Peter Van Rossem finished 1st in all three races. Shanti, sailed by Perryn Bennet, James Fair (Matt's Son) and Anders Brown sailed their first regatta together and gathered lots of information and experience to help them in the next regatta coming up which will be in Belleville in three weeks time. The Shark North American Championships. We all had a nice dinner after sailing and a band came in to entertain the sailors.
Sunday racing started at 1000. All the boats were on time but unfortunately the wind wasn't. We waited until approximately noon when the RC flew flags AP over H signalling … All signals will be made ashore. Once all boats were in the harbour, the RC waited another 30 minutes and called the regatta finished due to lack of wind.
Congrats to Josh, Matt and Peter for winning the Coupe de Quebec and congrats to Perryn, James and Anders for a respectable finish in their first regatta together. Results can be found at Sailwave Shark Coupe du Quebec Regatta 2025 at Yacht Club de Pointe Claire 2025
