SHARK NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AT BQYC
Bay of Quinte Yacht Club (BQYC) was host to the 2025 Shark North American Championships this past weekend June 28 -29. 33 boats from Sarnia, LaSalle ON, Montreal, Hull QC, Niagara on the Lake, Hamilton, Toronto, Whitby, Picton, Belleville and finally Kingston took part.
Racing was supposed to start Saturday at 1100 but a storm front was the cause for the RC to fly AP on shore so we waited. It was 1300 when we got to start racing and the Race Committee (RC) managed to get 3 races in for the day. Our scores for the day were good with a 3, 1 and ending the day with a 2nd. Unfortunately, once ashore, we saw the official results and we were UFD’d in the last race. UFD’d is the same as a black flag but somewhat forgiving if a general recall is called. That didn't happen so we were scored, along with others, 33 pts in that race. I can explain in more detail if you ask.
This got interesting for us because we now needed to sail at least 2 more races in order to be able to drop our 33 pts.
Sunday started with a fresh breeze coming from the west-north west and we were scheduled to start at 1000. By the time we got to the RC boat, the wind was north and then west and then south and even east along with no wind at all. It was very frustrating so Josh, being an avid fisherman, pulled out his Pickerel fishing rod and spoon (lure) and began fishing. I was instructed to keep the boat moving at 1.2 knots for the best action on the attached spoon. It wasn't long until Josh had one on the end of his line. After landing the Pickerel into the cockpit, Josh quickly removed the hook, got the photo proof with cheers from the fleet, he promptly got him back into the bay for the next time.

It was around 1300 when the wind started filling in from the SW and it came in quickly. The RC was able to set up the course quickly and we were racing at 1330. The RC was able to get in 2 races which allowed us to drop our 33 pts from our total score. Josh Wilby and Matt Fair and I had an awesome time reading the shifts successfully and plotting out our way up the course to finish 3,1 3,1 for our regatta win.
Also participating were Robin Wynne-Edwards, Jay Ladinik and Pasha Samuleev on board Inevitable, John Adams, Roger Bowes and Hans Martin on board R&R and Mel Gummer, stepping in on short notice to help local BQYC boat Stress Relief in a pinch. All KYC participants represented KYC well at BQYC and we all look forward to next year when BQYC will host the 2026 Shark World Championships.
