July 5th, RCYC in Toronto was host to the TORBAY Invitation Regatta.

Matt Fair and Peter Van Rossem accepted the Invitation to represent KYC along with  9 other clubs and duke it out over 5 back to back races held in the Toronto Harbour in front of RCYC.

The boats we used were the  Ideal 18.  18 foot long fin keel and spade rudder.  They had full open cockpit from transom to mast.   The rigs are ? with a self tacking jib.  They also have spinnakers which launched from a bag just to port of the mast.

The Toronto Harbour on a Saturday was full of Ferries, Water Taxi, many Power and Sail Boats.   A really nice scene except for the waves they produced.  In a 18 foot keelboat, we felt every wave and it tossed every boat up and down, side to side knocking the wind out of the sails making it extremely hard to keep the boat moving in SE winds of 5 -7 knots.

The start was 1155 Saturday which allowed all the competitors to get somewhat acquainted with the boats. Mostly in operating the spinnaker hoist, gybes, launch and take down procedures of the spinnaker which was good.   We finished racing around 1600 and sailed back to the club.   After de-rigging we had refreshments on the lawn under the trees to shelter from the sun.   Awards were given and shortly after we all took part in a wonderful dinner laid out on tables over the lawn.   Matt and Peter had a great time representing KYC and placed second overall.
