Powick sisters win silver overall and top female at Sail Canada Club 420 Youth Nationals

 

The Sail Canada C420 Youth Nationals was hosted August 2-5 by CORK.  The KYC team was proudly represented by four C420 teams (Bram Cruickshank/Georgia Ruddy O'carroll, Jill Sydor/Rowan Connell, Lauren Barnett/Xander Liu, Nikola/Anna Powick).  These sailors were led by coaches Jonah Fy and Owen Newbigging.

After a great training event led by Jeff Boyd and other KYC volunteers on July 31st, our 420 sailors were excited to start competing!

 

On Saturday August 2nd, the opening ceremony brought together the athletes, coaches and volunteers to officially get the event underway.  KYC’s very own Bram and Georgia did an excellent job of reading the athlete’s oath on behalf of all the competitors.   Thereafter, the “D flag” was soon raised and the boats hit the water.

 

The first two days of the event brought on a lot of breeze, and with it a lot of excitement for the 88 boat fleet.    The wind on Saturday and Sunday hit over 20 knots from the southwest “ish”. The waves were quite steep and challenging to get through, especially on port tack.  The third day brought lighter conditions once again from the south west.  The last day served up a tricky dish of east “with a bit of north” with less than 10 knots conditions.  A total of 5 qualifying and 6 “final championship” races were completed.  After the 5 qualifying races, a “Gold” and “Silver” fleet was established.  Each afternoon after racing, Ken Dool (Sail Canada’s High performance coach) led debriefs and welcomed questions from athletes and coaches.  

 

Throughout the competition, the KYC teams persevered on the water, experienced the many facets of  a “big regatta” environment and made new friends from across the country.   Full results Sailwave results for Sail Canada Youth Fest & Club 420 Youth Championship at CORK/Sail Kingston 2025
