Sail Canada 29er Youth Nationals and 49erfx Senior Championships (August 21-24)

 

KYC was represented by two skiff teams this past weekend at Portsmouth Olympic Harbor.  

 

Nikola & Anna Powick, after their success in the 420 youth circuit this season, jumped into the 29er for this regatta.  Prior to the competition, they had 8 days of sailing the 29er skiff under their belts.  Special thanks to all those who helped support "the project" of getting the club 29er “sailable” so they and future KYC junior sailors could try out and practice in this youth boat! Coaches Jonah Fy and Owen Newbigging were tremendous in helping the girls learn as much as they could about the boat (and swim less:)).   It was a very steep learning curve for this sister combo as they became more confident with this “tippier”, much faster boat with an asymmetrical spinnaker.   There were twenty-nine 29ers competing. Heading into the regatta, they aimed to finish all the races, learn something new every race and of course make a few new friends!  All goes were accomplished.  Their sailing improved steadfastly and on the last day they placed 10, 12 and 14th.  They ended up 22nd overall.   Special thanks to all the KYC members,  KYC staff and Wind Athletes for all efforts made to get the Powick team to the start line.    The support from the KYC Corinthian fund was a game changer with regards to opportunities made available for Nikola and Anna this summer, and incredibly appreciated.

 

KYC 420 race team graduates Tristan Tolmie-Daymond & Jonathan Sponholz-Ruskin sailed their first ever 49erFx competition.  After spending the summer at KYC learning how to sail the boat, they were excited to have another boat to race against!  They beat the other competing 49erFx (from Ithaca Yacht Club, USA) in 8 of the 12 races.   In the end they placed first.
