KYC and Queens’ Teams Dominate at First RS 21 Canadian Nationals
Members may have noticed a lot of activity early last week on the KYC Breakwall with 5 trailers being tweaked, to haul five RS 21 Sailboats to Halifax (Bedford Basin Yacht Club - BBYC) to attend the first RS 21 Canadian National Championships Regatta.
12 boats made a great showing for this first time event. KYC entered two teams, Team 1 - Glenn Warner, Jim Colquhoun and Luke Kaufman (Glenn later asked Robert Weguelin to skipper his team) and Team 2 - Josh Wilby, Geo Jackson and Peter Van Rossem. Queen's also entered two teams, Team 1 - Thomas Elia, Mansell Styles, Samantha Mastel-Marr and Jack Warner and Team 2 - Julian Hill, Cole Bonnell and Samson Barbera. The fifth boat was sailed by Dalhousie U featuring KYC coach Jonah Fy. Our own Christina Dinsmore also stepped in offering help in the protest room.
Teams left Thursday morning, early for Halifax. Just driving this time of year was worth the trip, seeing all the colours going through all four provinces. Friday morning, Teams worked hard to get the boats ready to practice, checking for currents, tides and spotting possible patterns in the wind.
Saturday racing started at 1100. N-NW, 10 to 14 gusting to 18 winds were predicted. Conditions were right and with the high shores of Bedford Basin, winds were very shifty and many puffs kept skippers and crew sharp.
Day one had KYC Team 2, Josh, Geo and Peter finish the day in first with a 1,1,7,1. Second, sailing consistently was Dalhousie and close behind Queen's Team 1 and 2 finishing the day in third and fourth respectively.
Sunday, winds didn't arrive until early afternoon from the South. Wind gradually increased to 10 knots. Our PRO, Paula and her RC Team wasted no time banging off three races before the deadline of 1500. Queen's Team 2 - dominated the day with 1,1,3 finishes while Queen's Team 1 had the next best finishes. KYC Team 2 managed to hold onto first place while both Queen's Teams upped their positions to second and third for the regatta.
KYC Team 1 managed to round the top mark in the last race in second, showing good potential in this tough fleet.
All the KYC, Queen's and Dalhousie Teams would like to thank Glenn Warner for giving us all the opportunity to represent our Clubs and Universities away. We all enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of BBYC and the Members made us feel welcome.
