2026 Coupe de Quebec

While KYC was deep into Sailpast, two local Sharks, Jonathan Livingston Seagull and new boat in the Shark Fleet,  Tweeter headed down river to attend 2026 Coupe de Quebec.  Beaconsfield Yacht Club did a wonderful job hosting a fleet of 21 Sharks.

The weather for Friday was great for getting to the event and allowed us to rig our boats in the afternoon.   Boats were launched and the Club sponsored the teams with a BBQ.

Saturday's forecast was not great for rain but there was good wind.   The race committee got our first race off at 1100.   It rained twice during the day's racing and winds which were coming out of the SSE earlier  in the day, ending veering South in the afternoon.   All races were sailed in 180 Genoa conditions and only applied back stay a number of times throughout the day to depower.     With 8 races scheduled for the regatta and each race lasting 50 minutes the RC decided to sail a 5th race.  This caused confusion on JLS after finishing the 4th race  first.  We headed directly back to BYC thinking we were finished for the day, celebrating our day with a couple of beers only to be chased down by the Pin Boat saying they were doing another race.  We made it back just in time for the start.

Saturday's dinner was an awesome meal serving us a half chicken (I suspect St-Hubert) along with sauce,  fries and salads.  We had a great dinner with fellow KYC team, see photo.

Sunday racing started at 1000 sharp.   The winds were NW to start and forecast to go NE at noon.   The first race was started and quickly AP’d after a big right shift caused boats over early do also to currant, pushing the fleet over the line early.    The RC spent the next 45 minutes pulling the pin mark to weather and quickly after a mark set, having to pull the pin again, due to the early arrival of the NE wind.   We finally got race 6 off and the wind piped up to top of 180 conditions with some ragging mains due to lighter crewed boats.    I have to add,  once the wind settled from the NE, this meant the advantage was to get to the north shore first and settle into the faster Ottawa River currant flowing east.  You knew you were into the current once you started seeing the difference in wave heights.  Short steep waves which you would think would hold back our speed on the port tack lay line but it didn't!   We hit 7.3 kts going upwind on this port tack when anywhere else we would be low 5 kts in these wave conditions.   Three races were sailed on Sunday and we all had a wonderful time.

Congratulations to Josh Wilby, Mansell Styles and Samantha Mastle-Marr for finishing a respectable 4th place in their first Shark regatta with Tweeter.  And congrats to Matt Fair, Jasmine Perera and Peter Van Rossem for winning Coupe de Quebec.
