| Feb 17: Trivia Ted's Quiz Night
Team Dolphin II would like to challenge all KYC members (new and old, sailors and non-sailors) to participate in the Annual KYC Quiz Night now to be held on Friday, February 17 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.. Mark your calendars and get your crew all pumped up for an evening that always proves to be entertaining, fun, informative and often somewhat humiliating for all but the winning contestants! We are pleased to once again have the considerable skills, depth of knowledge and crowd controlling expertise of Past Commodore Ted Ison as our Quizmaster. Questions will be sailing related as well as of general interest – something for salty dogs and landlubbers alike! Dolphin II crew members are now scrounging for prizes to be awarded (hopefully) to the top 3 teams. We encourage members to form teams (max 6 members/team) based on boat crew, family associations, or simply smart friends that you think will know the answers. There will be lots of opportunity to scramble together a team from those at the bar, but to help the Dolphin II crew please submit your team entry to Greg McNab no later than February 15 so we can make the appropriate arrangements.
Remember…it is not what you know ...or who you know ...it is if you know someone that thinks they know all the answers…and you can get them on your Trivia Team!

For two evenings in February and March we’ll welcome KYC member, local author and historian David More who will talk about Kingston and the region’s military, commercial and recreational maritime heritage.
Put these dates in your calendar:
February 22, 7:00 – 9:00 – “Stone Hookers” will focus on Kingston and Lake Ontario from the era of New France until the time of Confederation.
March 8, 7:00 – 9:00 – “Ch-ch-changes – Sail to Steam, Wood to Iron, Sailing for Pay to Sailing for Pleasure” will focus on the years since Confederation.

Launch for spring 2017 is now set for May 3-4. May 3-4 is a Wednesday- Thursday sequence. We were originally booked for April 22-23 but that’s a tad early! Alternate weekend dates are impossible.

We currently have accounts with Royal Bank, Toronto Dominion, Bank of Montreal, and Kingston Community Credit Union. Simply add “Kingston Yacht Club” as a payee, enter your club ID and your ready to go! If you have any difficulties, questions, or concerns please contact the office.
Coming soon will be Scotiabank and CIBC. We expect Scotiabank will be live within a few weeks with CIBC to follow in mid-March.

Oak-aged Vidal pale ale “Iron Shirt” released for third week of feBREWary
Beau’s Brewing Co.’s month-long winter beer celebration feBREWary is now onto its third week with the release of Iron Shirt, a unique oak-aged Vidal pale ale brewed in collaboration with Montréal’s Brasserie et Distillerie Oshlag.
In creating this interesting take on the pale ale style, the brewers from Beau’s and Oshlag fermented the beer using 300 kilograms of hand-picked Ontario-grown organic Vidal ice wine grapes that were soaked for two weeks in Oshlag’s hopped vodka. The resulting beer is unlike anything Beau’s has done before.
“Our goal at Brasserie Oshlag is to do research and development, and running experiments,” says Gabriel Charbonneau, head brewer at Oshlag. “For the collaboration, we tried to mix Beau’s expertise with ours.”
Iron Shirt is hazy yellow in colour with fruity, citrus and grape notes on the nose. Its flavour balances bitterness with clean malt notes. This 6.8% alc/vol pale ale finishes dry with mild grain alcohol warmth. Iron Shirt will be released at more than 250 restaurants and pubs in Ontario and Québec as part of the 6th annual feBREWary series, in which Beau’s releases one new beer every week in the winter month. It will also be available on tap and in bottles at the Vankleek Hill, Ont.-based brewery’s tasting room, and by the bottle at approximately 75 Québec retailers.
Based in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district of Montréal, Brasserie et Distillerie Oshlag brews beer and distills spirits under one roof. Oshlag’s primary spirit is its hopped vodka, which lends its flavour to Iron Shirt. Aside from being the third release for the feBREWary 2017 series, this collaboration also marks Beau’s second release for Ottawa 2017, the nation’s capital’s official celebration of Canada’s 150th. A portion of the sales from each beer in the Ottawa 2017 series goes to charity, in this case the Montréal community organization Je Passe Partout will benefit. Je Passe Partout works with schools in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve area, helping children through academic and family support programs. jepassepartout.org.

Farm to Table 2015 Cabernet Merlot

This wine embodies thier connection to the land and their enjoyment of it. Created to match with farm raised meats, Farm To Table Cabernet Merlot offers more acidity and fleshier fruit character than traditionally seen in Aussie reds making it ideal for beef. Medium bodied; look for ripe notes of blackberry, cherry, plum and green pepper on both the nose and the palate followed by a spicy finish.
| Sail Canada Sailor of the Month - Erin Rafuse & Danielle Boyd
Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here are the latest recipients.
Rio Olympians Erin Rafuse (RNSYS) and Danielle Boyd (KYC/RNSYS) returned to World Cup action for the first time since competing at 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. The World Cup Series Miami is the first stop of World Sailing’s 2017 circuit.
Erin and Danielle sailed the Olympic class skiff boat, the 49erFX, setting sail straight to the medal race in 6th place, sailing a strong double point final to lock up 5th place overall in the 16 boat fleet.
“We are really happy with our performance,” said helm Erin Rafuse. “We sailed one of our most consistent series in our most challenging conditions. We made a couple mistakes, keeping us out of the top 3, but overall thrilled with the end result.”
This marks a personal best at a World Cup for the Canadian 49erFX team. Rafuse and Boyd placed 16th at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

| Race Management Courses
Set aside the weekend of March 18/19. Bill Visser of CBYC and KYC's Ross Cameron will present courses leading to Sail Canada Certification. The first course, a little more than half a day in length, covers material relate to your beng an Assistant Race Officer, knowledgeable about all the roles excepting being the Principal Race Officer. The second course, taking the remainder of the weekend, deals with your being given the background to be the person responsible for conducting a race/regatta - the Princiapal Race Officer. (Club level)

Some of the committees need more volunteers. Listed below are the committees that need members and the number of additional members that each needs. This opportunity is open to all, regardless of membership type.

Learn to Sail (ALTS and JS) (continue development of our programmes) 2 people
Marketing Advisory (develop programmes to get out the word about KYC) 2 people
Membership (look at our programme and recommend changes) 2 people
Committees typically meet a few time each year. This is an opportunity for you to more deeply involved in the Club and to be part of the future.

There is a need to give the Men?'s? and ?Women’s bathroom?s? in? the? S?aints Rest a badly needed facelift.
To save on labour cost we are looking for volunteers to help clean the walls, paint the celling?s, tear out the vanities and clean the dividers. It would be great if we could get 8 people to help. That way the work will go much quicker.
