Women in Wind would like to thank Chef Neil and Greg for another great night at the club. Women in Wind's first annual cooking night with the chef was a resounding success! The menu was delicious! The drinks were perfect for cruising! The company was superb. Many thanks to everyone who participated! We look forward to planning a night like this in the future.

We need as many hands on deck as we can get.

Launch is easier than haul, masts up is trickier than masts down.
With a bit of luck we can put up a few masts on Wednesday.
Currently the plan is to do the yard first, then the breakwater, with as many masts as we can squeeze in.
Remember, volunteers get fed and “watered” both days.

Women in Wind will continue to meet every Wednesday evening in the spring after yoga with Norah 4-5pm. Join us for social time directly after yoga for drinks, dinner etc.

This beer has been brewed with fresh - picked local blueberries from Canaan Blueberres which is located just outside Ottawa!
| Wine of the Month
Get out your vegetable-tanned ponchos and hemp shopping bags, we’re going organic for the month (I thought it would be fitting as Earth Day is coming up (April 22)). Not because pesticides are bad for us. Rather, because I believe – and studies are showing that wine made from organically grown grapes is better tasting than it's given credit for, and it should be given credit. Does organic wine taste better? The scientific answer: Yes.
I wanted to introduce you to the Torres family who are arguably one of the most recognizable names in Spanish wine. Torres was founded in 1870 and is 100% family owned. They also have vineyards in Central Valley, Chile which is where this great Cabernet Sauvignon is located. Their vineyard is located between the Pacific and the Andres Mountains and comes from certified organic vineyards where viticulture methods respect the environment.

Deep ruby in colour; subtle aromas of raspberry and cassis, with notes of mint and spice; dry, with medium body, low acidity and fine-textured, supple tannins; flavours of cassis and raspberry, supported by vanilla, and savoury notes of spice and mint; fruit flavours linger on a lengthy finish.

New Dock Update:
Last Friday, April 21, we were finally able to get a detailed view of the ways the Club’s plans will interface with the needs of Kehoe Marine, the company chosen to build and install our new docks. On Friday, we heard that Kehoe was ready to make a delivery on May 1. He would then install the main dock extension, re-anchor the existing dock and repair the finger dock that broke off last fall, work that would take three days - May 2, 3, 4.
Launch and Mast Stepping are scheduled (during this time) May 3, 4, and we could not have major construction happening at the same time. The idea of moving launch dates was considered and rejected – crane availability and consideration of members.Therefore, we have asked Kehoe to delay delivery until after Launch and Mast Stepping, docks arriving Monday, May 8. This will allow our boat owners a window to work with their rigs and to move as needed.
So, the plan is this:
Launch and Mast Stepping will happen, as planned, on May 3, 4; · Kehoe Marine will deliver and install the new moorings May 8 – 12, meaning that boats assigned to the main dock, its new extension and the ‘W’ dock will need alternate placement; Boat owners affected by the installation will be contacted and plans for their alternate mooring from May 8 - 12 will be solidified; Because the installation requires that the harbour is essentially closed for the installation period, the Sailing Committee, by Sailing Instruction amendment, will cancel racing for May 9 and 11; Boats affected by the installation will be able to move to their assigned moorings on May 13.
As said in an earlier note, the mooring changes we’re making this spring are really significant. At Sailpast on June 3 we’ll be able to celebrate another leap forward.

| Cruisers' Annual Dinner
The Cruisers' Annual Dinner was held last Saturday evening. Beginning with a fun and challenging Boating Trivia quiz led by Rob Crothers and Kate Simpson, the group then enjoyed a first rate meal prepared by Chef Neil and his staff. After dinner, informative presentations of recent sailing experiences down south were given by Bob Story, Chris Walmsley and Peter Cohrs. In total 44 members and guests attended a most enjoyable evening, complete with lots of laughter, great company and a shared love of our sport. A most sincere thank-you to event organizer Kate Simpson and committee for their efforts.
| Chris Walmsley: 2017 Brass Winch Award
This evening we have the opportunity to say thank-you to a very special member of the KYC Community. Despite having already served Kingston Yacht Cub for many years as a Board Member, Flag Officer and then Commodore, Chris Walmsley continues to work tirelessly on behalf of our venerable old Club. He remains involved in many aspects of Club affairs, from jury committee development (for the racing crowd), regatta organization work, the Information Management Committee and most notably, many long and difficult hours as Chairman of the Harbour Redevelopment Committee. We are shortly going to enjoy the fruits of his hard work, and that of his dedicated committee, as the next phase of the harbour expansion occurs within the next few weeks. This evening, Chris again stepped forward to compile our slideshow and visual presentations, in support of the Cruising Fleet.
Over the past year, Chris has also volunteered a great deal of his time and expertise to Ze and I, as we went through the process of moving up to our new boat. As a fellow owner of a Hunter Legend, Chris has been nothing short of a wonderful friend and mentor, as he imparted his knowledge and recommendations. Chris readily volunteered to help us beginning with pre-purchase issues of evaluating the boat, and has, on many occasions, imparted invaluable wisdom and nuggets of information that would otherwise been years for us to learn. Not too many people would happily lend a hand in the dead of winter to help wrestle out someone else's cutlass bearing.
As a community of sailors, and within the very special group of people that constitute Kingston Yacht Club, Chris Walmsley exemplifies the spirit of ongoing volunteerism, selfless dedication and enthusiasm. I am very proud to call him my friend. And for this year, Past Commodore Chris Walmsley is awarded the Brass Winch Award."| KYC SAILORS' HANDBOOKS
The "2017 Sailors' Handbook" was introduced at the recent Sailors' Evening and printed copies distributed. The handbook includes details on Racing (events and Sailing Instructions), Cruising, Women In Wind, and Radio Controlled sailing programs at KYC. Additional copies of the handbook are available at the office/bar.
| RACE COMMITTEE DUTY
The Race Committee duties for all of May and most of June were assigned at the Sailors' Meeting. Each racing boat has a yearly obligation to perform 2 race committee duties on evening races and/or weekend events between May and September. Current assignments can be viewed online at "Sailing / Racing / Race Committee Duty" on KYC web site. Send email to race@kingstonyachtclub.com to request/modify an assignment.
| NEW RULES
A limited number of copies of the new "2017-2020 Racing Rules of Sailing" handbook are available at the office/bar for $22. They can also be purchased online at Sail Canada's web site.
