| High Water Precautions
If you have been down to the Club lately, you would have seen the increased water levels that have crested the harbour and is now covering our walkways and patio around the Clubhouse. As we saw the issue unfolding, a plan was devised and the outcome as you can see has been for Brad and the team to create decks for members and guests as so our docks and property are safe to access. (Not to worry….We have plans to use the wood in other projects once the water reseeds!). This unfortunately, has left us with little time to get the real part of opening the Club completed. Just so you know we have not forgotten them, and wanted all to understand we will turn our attention and focus on the below mentioned items once time allows:
Opening of Jemmett’s (please see other article for further details)
JS & Guest Washroom cleanup & Renovation
Launching / Painting / Mast Stepping of Sharks and Jessie
Gas Dock – Inspection needs to occur once they become operational
Yard – General Cleanup & Review electrical that is currently underwater
JS Coach Boats – Minor work & general Cleanup (for the program)
Saints Rest – Clean up, paint, repair for new occupancy
Gravel area & Lockers outside JS Washrooms: Regraded and new stone to be poured
Parking Lot – Regraded & Cleaned up
Harbour – Re numbering of entire Harbour (with the addition of our new slips
Emergency Walkway – Almost Complete!
Create new patio (outdoor experience) on our beach & surrounding area
This is just a description of a few items that need our attention (within each of the numbered items, there also is a list of other “things” in which work needs to be performed (I just wanted to highlight the area).
| Computer Equipment Donation
We are looking to upgrade our wind display equipment to share more info including radar and water levels. We are looking for old business computers that can run Windows 7 or better (Windows 7 Pro is preferred). Also looking for flat screen monitors to mount on the wall (we can supply the mount). If you have anything which might be suitable to donate, please email matt.white@kingstonyachtclub.com

Thanks to Chris Walmsley and Matt White there's a new display on our website weather section. It displays information about water level, in particular, the depth of water on the main dock (patio in their terms)

Women in Wind will continue to meet every Wednesday evening in the spring after yoga with Norah 4-5pm. Join us for social time directly after yoga for drinks, dinner etc.

Bodacious Blueberry Blonde Ale
Packing an awesome - gnarly - radical punch is this latest creation from Broadhead called Bodacious Blueberry Blonde Ale. When you take a sip of this one, you'll be reminded that summer is about to be here! Watch out - there's a wallop of Blueberry flavour and aroma in a clear golden blonde ale. This beer has been brewed with fresh - picked local blueberries from Canaan Blueberres which is located just outside Ottawa!
| Wine of the Month
I have been saving this launch for our Boat Launch! I am a HUGE FAN of a good Chianti, and I know this one will not disappoint! For when you say “Italian wine” and you say Chianti.
It is the most commonly consumed wine in Italy, and interestingly, the most commonly consumed Italian wine in the world, Chianti is emblematic of what Italy means to the world of wine. Chianti is a red wine that comes from Tuscany, but can contain small amounts of white grapes during blending. This is not the case with Chianti Classico, which must be solely made from red Sangiovese grapes (fresh cherry, strawberries, and red plum pleasure the senses when enjoying this wine). Winemakers have spent the last couple of decades trying to change the old image of Chianti: Wine bottles in wicker basket, interestingly also called fiascoes. They've done so by producing very nice wines through state of the art growing and fermentation techniques..
Chanit is not considered to age well, and loses steam quickly. Find the youngest bottle you can to get the most out of its vibrance. This wine is versatile and its high acidity allows it to be eaten with a wide range of foods. Enjoy Chianti best with fast food, pizza, red pasta, and salami sandwiches.
The Chianti I have chosen is Castiglioni Chianti, which is a deep ruby red with purplish highlights. Notes of small red-berry fruits like mulberry and currant insinuate themselves on the nose, while the ripe plum is perfectly in tune with fragrant violet and geranium. The palate is smooth, warm and elegantly balanced. A long, harmonious finish, good persistency, with a lightly spicy aftertaste.
Full-flavored dishes such as meat-sauced pappardelle, and roast chicken as well, sautéed beef with vegetables, and medium-aged cheeses. A perfect pairing with this weekend’s dinner special! “Bulgogi Flank steak with house made Kim Chi”

Junior Sailing
| Summer Sailing
We weather is getting warmer and it has been beautiful out on the water last week! Spaces in the summer program are very quickly running out - make sure you and your friends are signed up.
| Spring Training
Registration for spring sailing is still open! If you're interested, please email James via: sailingmanager@kingstonyachtclub.com Last Wednesday it was an absolutely beautiful evening out on the water with 6 - 14 knot breeze. We continued to have a boat handling / speed focus + discussed some outcome and process goals (general, knowledge, mental and fitness) for the season. The sailors did some rudderless, long up / downs, and a couple of boat handling focused races which had a backwards sailing twist. It is fantastic to see the sailors learning new skills and developing existing skills.
| Dinghy Racing - Monday Nights
Just a reminder that Monday evenings are Dinghy Race Night. - it will be fun racing! Coach James will be out on the water and will do some coaching and starting analysis for all sailors who are out on the water. The next Monday Night racing is: May 29th The schedule is:

We continue the coach focus series which enables the sailors to learn a little bit more about their coaches for the season. Mike Jenkins - Laser Race & LTR Coach (left)
Mike Jenkins grew up sailing through the junior sailing program at Nepean Sailing Club (NSC) in Ottawa. He was part of the Nepean Sailing Club's High Performance Race team, sailing Laser Radial for two seasons throughout Canada. In the summer of 2013, he joined the KYC High Performance Race Team. In 2014, he was part of the tier 1 Ontario Sailing Team in the Laser Radial. This enabled Mike to train and compete with the best radial sailors in North America. Due to being too light for full rig, he began racing on the Ontario Windsurfing Team. He continues to still race on this team and has trained and competed internationally against several Olympians. In 2015, he took the CANsail 3-4 coaching clinic and coached at the Outer Harbor Sailing Federation in Toronto, where he coached a range of single and double-handed boats. The following spring he co-coached the Toronto Windsurfing Club's youth racing team that summer. Mike has just completed his 2nd year of his Kinesiology undergraduate program at Trent University.
James Hickey - CANsail 3/ 4 Division Head (middle)
James will be entering his fourth year at Queen’s University this fall as a student of Political Science and Global Development. Born and raised in Kingston Ontario, this will be James’ fourteen summer as part of the Kingston Yacht Club junior sailing community and sixth summer coaching. After sailing 420’s competitively for four years as a member of the KYC Race Team, in 2012 James decided to utilize his experience as a sailor to teach others. James has a variety of coaching experience in Opti’s and 420’s at the beginner, intermediate and advanced/racing levels. He is certified as a Sail Canada Instructor for CANSail levels 1 through 4 and is excited to be returning to KYC in the capacity of CANSail 3/4 Division Head.
Elizabeth Rouget - CANsail 1/ 2 Division Head (right)
Elizabeth Rouget graduated from King's and Dalhousie in Halifax in 2016 and is currently studying her Master's at UofT in the fall. This will be her sixth summer as an instructor at KYC and her 17th summer sailing. She has sailed competitively with the Dalhousie Sailing Team and the UofT Sailing Team and has competed at the Student Yachting World Cup 3 times. Elizabeth races regularly in the club racing at KYC and is passionate about introducing young sailors to both dinghy and keelboat sailing. She is looking forward to a great summer at KYC Junior Sailing.
| You 'Opti' Try it - Relay Race Fundraiser for the JS Race Program
On Saturday June 17 from 11am to 6pm, there will be relay style races (with one adult, one child), awards, entertainment, a silent auction and a BBQ. There's a $100 team pledge (suggested entry) which allows you to race, receive 2 BBQ tickets plus 2 participant goody bags.

The America's Cup Louis Vuitton racing gets underway next Friday, May 26th. Watch the action live at KYC! The bar and restaurant will be open. Racing is from 4pm - 6pm, with the opening ceremony at 7:30pm.

| Jemmett's Landing
INTERESTED IN HELPING COMMISSION JEMMETT'S LANDING FOR THE SEASON? We need a group of volunteers to go to Jemmett's Landing to get the Property ready for the year. The plan would be to go there by boat on Sunday, May 28 and to spend a few hours getting it ready for the year. The plan is to gather at the club at 9:30am and leave shortly after for a day at the property. Arrival by land is also possible. If you can contribute please contact Greg at manager@kingstonyachtclub.com
| Able Sail Volunteers
Able Sail is seeking additional volunteer board members. The board members collectively run the program and maintain the fleet, but at this time we especially need people with some fundraising skills.
Don’t want to make a full commitment to the board? We also welcome volunteers to help out with boat maintenance/repair, companion sailing, and event planning – on a one-time or continuing basis. The Able Sail program is very fun and rewarding, and we would love to have your participation.
| RACING HAS STARTED!
To kick off the May series, we had 7 boats (3 Sharks and 4 PHRF) out Tuesday and 9 boats (3 Sharks and 6 PHRF) Thursday, including 2 new boats on the line: a Farr/Mumm 30 (Wilby/Hull syndicate) and a 2nd Mirage 24 (Weguelins). James Rountree, our new KYC Sailing Manager, is getting up to speed very quickly. If you get a chance, say hi to James. An electrically rejuvenated Orange Peel is back in service. Remember, the water is very cold (and high) so please dress accordingly and be careful out there!
The is a very cool (and free) iPhone/Android app called RaceQs available for fleets of racing boats to record their tracks and view online after racing. See raceqs.com for more info. RaceQs could provide some post-race entertainment and perhaps even a few insights. Thanks to Chris Currie for suggesting this. Let's try it out...

* Unfilled Race Committee slots will be automatically assigned in early June. Note: weekend races are eligible too. Many of these only require starting a race on Saturday morning.
* People looking for a boat to crew on should sign up on the white board before evening races.
* There are still a few Sailors' Handbooks and 2017-2020 Racing Rules books available (ask at the bar).
