Special announcements
| A Special Thanks
As our Commodore mentioned during last week's talk at Sailpast's Reception Party, we wanted to thank Brad, Max, and the Gas Dock Team (Nick, Sean) during the last month for all of their efforts to keep KYC operational, safe and looking good! Our ASAP list continues to grow and become altered as each day has passed. Through it all they have continued to keep a smile on their face, and have continued to deliver with greater than anticipated expectations!
When you see the team working in the yard, please stop for a moment say "hi" and give them a pat on the back for a job well done!
Thanks Gents!| A message from the office
We would like to thank all the members who have set the Club up as a Payee with your Bank Institution. We have seen an increase in this usage and plan on recognizing a cost saving with respect to bank charges by the year's end. We have also seen more activity of member use on our website! (Another Positive!!) If you are having issues with the website or notice (or have noticed) an error in billings or account activity, please give us a ring and we (well, John) will be more than happy to assist with any questions or concerns. Please remember, if it is your first time loggin in, your user name and password will be your account number.
| Stickers and Membership Cards are In!
Just a reminder to stop in at the Bar (if you have not already done so) and pick up your Car Stickers and Membership Cards! Brad and the team have done a great job in getting the yard ready for our dry mooring members so please remember to register your dry mooring with Greg in the front office (Mon-Fri 9-5) if you have not already done so (I see a few boats out there that do not have stickers on them!)
| Request for Historic Photos
If any of our members are in possession of historic photos of the club, could you please scan them and send to office@kingstonyachtclub.com

| Beer of the Week
We are bringing back an old favourite from last year! Our Featured tap for this month is Waupoos Premium Cider! Enjoyed all across Ontario this slightly sweet, off-dry cider is perfect to sip on the patio or to compliment full flavored meals. You'll notice the pale straw like colour & light pear & apple aromas as it pours. Waupoos has a zesty acidity and tangy apple flavour with a crisp lingering finish and underlying tannic qualities. We hope you enjoy this taste of summer from the County Cider Co.
| Wine of the Month
Cazal Viel Syrah Rose
Cazal Viel Rose is a fresh and lively wine from the Languedoc-Roussillon reigon of France. Built on the ruins of ancient Roman an villa, Chateau Cazal Viel's land has a rich history of wine production stretching back as far as the year 1202 when the monks of the local Abbaye de Fontcaude used this site to cultivate their wine. Following the French Revolution in 1789 the Miquel family acquired the estate and began a family legacy of wine production that continues today.
Our wine of the month has a delicate pink colour with a blend of 85% Syrah & 15% Cinsault grape, This wine has invigorating red fruit flavours with round, mellow structure and a fresh and lively finish make this a perfect rose to accompany a meal or as a refreshing beverage all on it's own.

Junior Sailing
| ADULT LEARN-TO-SAIL
KYC is offering the Start Keelboat Sailing qualification which is an entry level course that builds basic keelboat sailing skills. This course is recommended for those with little boating or sailing experience that want to experience sailing on a keelboat and begin to build basic sailing skills in a relaxed environment and at a comfortable pace. The vast majority of the time will be spent on the water. Students will need to complete a workbook as an open book learning exercise before the end of the sessions in their own time.
Adult Learn to Sail Coaches - Sean Magee-Saxton and Simone Larose
Here's a little info about Sean:
Sean grew up sailing, and raced 420s, FJs, and keelboats for Queen’s University. He was a two-time MVP on the Queen’s Sailing team, and was the President of the Queen’s Recreational Sailing program at KYC. He has five years of coaching experience, and was head instructor at Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club last year. He is also currently pursuing a B.Ed. at Queen’s University.
Simone's bio will be in next week's Knotmeter
Pricing (for 18 hours of instruction, Start Keelboat Sailing qualification, and a one month KYC temporary membership)
$600 (non-members)
$400 (members)
Schedule of courses
Adult courses are offered in two formats:
- Weekday evenings (seven evenings, with one back up evening scheduled on the Wednesday after the last session in case of poor weather) from 5:30pm to 8:30pm
- Weekend (4 days, with one back up weekend day scheduled on the Saturday after the last session in case of poor weather) from 10am to 5pm (with 1 hour for lunch).
For course dates and to SIGN UP, please visit: http://www.kingstonyachtclub.com/adult-sailing| Summer Sailing
The Junior Program starts very soon on July 3rd - Spaces are very quickly running out. Make sure you and your friends are signed up before you miss out. It's going to be a great summer for sailing and being out on the water.
| Dinghy Racing - Monday Nights
As the weather and the water continue to warm up, we will be postponing Dinghy Race Night until Monday, June 26th. Mark it on your calendars, find yourself a skipper or a crew, and get ready for some fun races with Coach James, Coach Grace and the other JS Coaches!
| Coach Focus
We are excited to have Robert Davis as one of our talented Guest Coaches this summer. Check out video on Facebook to hear Robert discuss his sailing background, coaching style, and his experiences of being a professional laser sailor travelling around the world for the last couple of years. https://www.facebook.com/KYCJuniorSailing/
We continue the coach focus series which enables the sailors to learn a little bit more about their coaches for the season.
Soren Hertz - Instructor
Soren has been sailing since an early age. He went through all of his levels at CBYC up until I needed to complete gold at KYC and sailed there. He enjoys sailing his laser recreationally as often as possible. When coaching, he creates a relaxed, fun environment. In his spare time he’s a national level trampolinist, and competes for Ontario at National meets. Currently he’s in Grade 13 at Frontenac Secondary School and will be attending Dalhousie next year to pursue a degree in Kinesiology.
Berg Ellemers - Instructor
Berg has recently completed his first year of University studying engineering at McMaster University. He has been sailing out of KYC for the past 13 years. He has raced competitively for 7 years competing in the Opti, 420, and laser radial, competing in regattas such as the 420 and Opti North Americans, CORK and Laser Worlds. This is Berg's second year instructing at KYC and he's super stoked to return to coaching at KYC and be able to pass on his passion and knowledge in sailing to others!
Sailing
| May Series completed!
After a delayed start, we managed to get 6 races in. The winners are:
PHRF I: 1st Force 10, 2nd Seattle Slewp, 3rd Shrapnel
PHRF II: 1st Jammin, 2nd Teymay, 3rd Selene
Sharks: 1st Cariad, 2nd Shanti, 3rd Shadfly
In order to make local club PHRF racing fairer, our PHRF reps (Rob Colwell and Ralph Shaw) have performed an analysis of historical race results data and worked with local club racers to come up with modified local PHRF-KYC ratings for our sport boats. These boats pose a particular challenge to handicappers, given their different performance characteristics, when compared to non-planing boats. A forthcoming "Notice To Competitors" will be posted on the Race Office detailing the changes.
The PHRF I fleet is looking for a new fleet co-captain. The role involves representing the fleet in club racing matters and participating in the Sailing Committee, which meets monthly. If you or someone you know might be interested in the role, please contact ken.martin@kingstonyachtclub.com.
Unfilled RC duty slots will be assigned on June 16. IMPORTANT CHANGE: in addition to fulfilling one of our 2 yearly obligations, a weekend race duty will also entitle the crew to get average points for a missed evening race (i.e. instead of a DNC). A change to Sailing Instructions will be posted on the Race Office bulletin board.
The Community Club boats, including Jessie (a C&C 25) and 2 Sharks are now available for racing by club members. This is a great chance for non-boat owning members to experience the wonders of racing! Thanks to Peter French, Brad and the gang for getting these boats in shape for the coming year. More Sharks will be available soon.
We have started using a cool smartphone app and web site called raceQs to record or race tracks for post-race viewing. See raceqs.com for details.
| Jemmett's update
Brad and the crew were out at the property earlier this week to "open" up the grounds. He was able to touch base with Dave Woodman (our Maintenance Person), as so they could review the property and come up with a maintenance plan. Please find a few photo's Brad was able to take while out there!
A few notes re: Jemmetts. We have put up the new tent and placed the mooring balls in the appropriate spots (please do not use the balls that have an X on them as the chain is worn and likely to break). We are working out a time for a diver to come in and put on new chains. Brad has also noted the last portion of the dock did not winter well (as you can see by the photos), unfortunately at this time we have no immediate plans to fix this. We recognize it is not ideal and dangerous. A plan will be formed within a week as to what we are going to do. Also HOGANS has agreed to assist us with our Port a Potty this season! Enjoy!

| 1000 Island Alerts
The 1000 Island National Parks has detailed listing of the many facility restrictions and property closures due to the high water levels we are experinecing this year.
We recommend to all to review prior to heading down river (details are updated regularly for each Island).

| Community Club Skippers
Ahoy 'Jessie' Skippers: Jessie is available for reservations. Many thanks to our Yard Steward Brad and interim Bosun Max for recent repairs. (Bosun Cole is away for a few weeks so please record maintenance requests in Jessie’s logbook and email yard@kingstonyachtclub.com.)
Jessie may be reserved as detailed in the 2016 Community Club manual (downloadable when reserving). Our C&C 24 is currently in slip 23 next to the clubhouse. A key is at the Bar until the gas dock is back in operation. Please return Jessie's key to the Bar.
Shark 'Moonshine' is in the water marking the end of the flooded gas dock. Moonshine is not yet ready to be reserved.
On Sat 3 Jun, I am looking for crew for 'Jessie' to salute the Commodore at Sail past. Leave harbour by 1330.
On Sat 17 Jun, KYC is planning a 'Get Out on the Water' event. The public will be invited to visit and learn about KYC and our Junior Sailing and Adult Learn to Sail programs. Looking for several Skippers to show our Community Club boats at the dock. Please let me know if you can be a Community Club ambassador for two hours between 1000 – 1400.

| Able Sail Volunteers
Able Sail is seeking additional volunteer board members. The board members collectively run the program and maintain the fleet, but at this time we especially need people with some fundraising skills.
Don’t want to make a full commitment to the board? We also welcome volunteers to help out with boat maintenance/repair, companion sailing, and event planning – on a one-time or continuing basis. The Able Sail program is very fun and rewarding, and we would love to have your participation.
| RACING HAS STARTED!
To kick off the May series, we had 7 boats (3 Sharks and 4 PHRF) out Tuesday and 9 boats (3 Sharks and 6 PHRF) Thursday, including 2 new boats on the line: a Farr/Mumm 30 (Wilby/Hull syndicate) and a 2nd Mirage 24 (Weguelins). James Rountree, our new KYC Sailing Manager, is getting up to speed very quickly. If you get a chance, say hi to James. An electrically rejuvenated Orange Peel is back in service. Remember, the water is very cold (and high) so please dress accordingly and be careful out there!
The is a very cool (and free) iPhone/Android app called RaceQs available for fleets of racing boats to record their tracks and view online after racing. See raceqs.com for more info. RaceQs could provide some post-race entertainment and perhaps even a few insights. Thanks to Chris Currie for suggesting this. Let's try it out...
Reminders:
* Unfilled Race Committee slots will be automatically assigned in early June. Note: weekend races are eligible too. Many of these only require starting a race on Saturday morning.
* People looking for a boat to crew on should sign up on the white board before evening races.
* There are still a few Sailors' Handbooks and 2017-2020 Racing Rules books available (ask at the bar).
