| Haulout

"Ya gotta be lucky to be good…Ya gotta be good to be lucky.” Last weekend we pulled off a minor end run….”dodged a bullet”…

The weather on Saturday could not have been better for our hauling travails, but the weather on Sunday would have proved impossible had we not… made the quick decision to move forward, full bore, to haul the breakwater boats on Saturday. The original Saturday agenda was to lift masts and T dock, then manoevre 7 mooring balls.

The weather wind forecast for Sunday was decidedly nasty, (SW30 - 45 knots) and hauling anything would have proved unsafe and impossible. So we took the decision to abandon the mooring balls and haul boats instead. Good thing. Sunday’s wind was as predicted, and nothing was hauled until noon. At that point the wind had clocked to the west, and the boatyard was in enough shelter that Brian the crane operator deemed it safe to try hauling. And haul we did. Four hours later we had lifted 22 boats on to their cradles and trailers. A job very well done.

Credit must go where credit is due. The luck was the weather. The good was the crew. The crew who was there in full force from stem to stern, who stuck it out to the end and provided seamless help. Our able crews of deriggers, mast handlers, hookers, slingers, liners, wheel barrow(ers), pad persons and boat pushers. All make for easier work with a fraction of the anxiety that often attends haulout weekend. And of course,… lots of free advice.

They are:

Saturday’s crew.

Rick Sellens, Rob Colwell, Darwin Muir, Ken Martin, Don Currie, Ross Cameron, Peter Fedora, Tom Moynihan, Peter Cohrs, Tarja Jaatinen and our most able timer and hustler-upper, Mary Westerland

Sunday's crew.

Rick Sellens, Rob Colwell, Andrew Kelm, Darwin Muir, Ken Martin, Don Currie, Ross Cameron, Bob Story, Ron Hodges, Mike Charrette, Ken Martin, Tom Moynihan,Graham Tattersall, Evan Chow, Jeb Thorley, “Dave”, and our able no-nonsense timer, Mary Westerland. Even Jim Beatson, lured by the fun of it all, came out of retirement to tug a line or two.

Thanks to Don Currie, for once again providing a stable stage boat in Bagatelle. Thanks to Brad Strawbridge for prepping the yards and placing cradles. I hope Phil Hart will return next year with his infectious sense of humour and able hooking! I hope I have not missed thanking anyone… if so, my apologies. (these things happen!)

| Clubhouse UpdateFacility Improvements, Keep the Club warm!

Ladies Washroom Reno

Starting November 9th, we will be remodeling the ladies washroom. The facilities will be “out of order” for about 10 days – two weeks. We are in the process of cleaning up the Able Sail office/Washroom for member usage during this time. We appreciate your patience during this long overdue project.

Keep the Club Warm

As we move into the cooler days, we just wanted to inform the membership that we ask you not to use the doors to enter or exit in the dining room, but instead please use the front doors. We are simply trying to ensure the members who are dining are not having their dining experience interrupted by a not so nice “cool breeze.” We appreciate your cooperation with this.
