| 2018 Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame Dinner

We would like to congratulate Ross on his induction to the 2018 Kingston & District Sports Hall of Fame. The dinner was held last Friday held at the Ramada. It was a great evening of frindship and speaches. The Club would like to thank all who attended in support of this special evening.

Ross' writeup

Ross Cameron was involved in all aspects of sailing over span of 40 years. The long time board member of the Kingston Yacht Club is a big reason for the success of CORK, the Canadian Olympic Training Regatta held in Kingston every summer.

“I got involved with CORK after the 1976 Summer Olympics and was able to modernize the event, which is now one of the biggest sailing regatta’s in the world,” says the retired principal from Welbourne Public School.

Cameron has received numerous awards over the years, and in 1995 was named Canada’s Yachtsmen of the Year for his contributions to the sport.

| Beer of the Week

Three Knocks

Sticke Alt: German-Style Altbier 7% ABV

Sticke Alt is a special, rare version of a German-style altbier; bigger and bolder than usual. Three Knocks features a decidedly robust but balanced blend of clean, crisp and bready malts, with an assertive hop backbone. Oaky undertones are courtesy of the oakwood aging.

History & Style
Seasonally or sometimes just once a year, altbier breweries in Dusseldorf will covertly brew special, stronger batches of their alt, and share them with family, friends and regular patrons. Beau’s toasts this historical tradition with Three Knocks, a stronger, bolder and oak-aged version of our award-winning altbier recipe.
Tasting Notes
Three Knocks pours brilliant mahogany with a dense ecru foam. The aroma offers deep grainy malt notes complemented by a touch of herbal hops. The flavour notes feature deep chewy malt and intense but balanced hop bitterness. The long finish offers resonances of crisp malts and spicy hops with a touch of woody tannin.

Members…
We, once again dodged not one, but TWO weather bullets! It seems as though, of late, we’ve been plagued by “circumstances beyond our control”. Thursday morning started off with a wimper as we received a call at 0745 that the crane wouldn’t start. Finally at 1135, Brian and his crane showed up and we were off. Valkyr touched the water at 1202hrs and by 1745hrs the tee dock was floating. Five and three quarter hours to launch forty boats and three docks.
Pretty good, I think!

Friday morning at 0800 we were enduring a cool drizzle and a slowish start, but once we got into the groove… I shuffled the schedule to make sure we had the tall masts up before the forecast winds roared in. It made for a few confusing moments but all in all, it worked. All your masts were up by 1345 hrs, and by about 1400 hrs I saw the windline along the river as the wind shifted from east to south west. Luckily and happily the real wind didn’t fill in til 1700 or so, and did it FILL IN! I visited the Club at 1930 and it was blowing 40 knots! I hope your rigs were tight!

After these two days, we’re all giving a, "phew!, dodged a bullet!"

So, with a combination of good planning supported by a very skilled and efficient crew, we got these two large jobs done! Thanks to ALL who toughed it out for one or two days to once again turn KYC from a "storage facility to Yacht Club! To Rob, Ron, Graham, John, Ken, Andrew, Steve, Rosemary, Kevin, Daniel, Mike, Chris, Don, Ralph, Ian, Elliot, Brad and Cole, thanks so much for making these two days so satisfying. A great crew. Thanks to to Brian, our crane operator for his usual wizardry. Thanks too, to the kitchen and bar staff for their hospitality.

I do want to ask for a half dozen members to come out the afternoon Friday the 11th May to load cradles for about three hours. Please contact Greg. I’ll be nowhere near Kingston, so won't be able to join in the fun. Thanks in advance to those who help again.

Cheers, and thanks again!
Peter Cohrs,
Rear Commodore.

| A Message from the Cruising Fleet

We are Ryan and Carolyn Heath, new co-captains for KYC Cruising Fleet. Ryan and I, along with our children Edward (7) and Elizabeth (5), became members at KYC at the start of the 2017 Season. We have heartily enjoyed our time at KYC so far and we look forward to spending many more years enjoying the club, the sailing, and the friendships we are creating. We plan to spend as much time on our "floating cottage" as we can. Please feel free to stop and say hi.

With the help of those that have volunteered in the past that offer advice and ideas, and with the continued help of those that are still able to take on organizing events, we are confident that 2018 will be a great season. For those that are looking to try their hand at organizing an event from previous years or if you would like to introduce something new please contact us. We are more than happy to advocate for you and assist you in your venture. Please direct all updates for the online handbook and Knotmetre through us.

We apologize for the slower than normal flow of information. Ryan and I are trying to get everything figured out. With the help of Peter Fedora and Ken Martin we are getting there and hope to have more information out shortly regarding upcoming events. Just as a "heads up", May 25 has been set as the date for the Cruisers Dinner. Paul Young has kindly taken on the task of organizing this evening and I am sure there will be more information available soon.

We look forward to meeting all of you.

| KYC RC Fleet

KYC RC fleets are sailing again! Four IOMs came out last night to a beautiful warm evening for sailing. The focus was on tuning and working through any bugs that had kept in during the winter storage. Several short races were run to reawaken those starting line skills. Next Monday will be a full slate of 8 races planned so dust off those IOMs and join in.

Wednesday at 6:00 will be the debut of the new Dragon Force 65 class at KYC. Everyone is welcome to come down to see and try sailing one of these interesting little boats. As with the IOMs the focus of the evening will be on set up and tuning and some informal races to ensure the boats are functioning properly. Formal racing will begin next week.

Looking forward to a great season.

Paul Switzer
KYC IOM Fleet Captain

At long last, weeknight racing started this week! On Tuesday we had 14 boats out in a <5 kts drifter and on Thursday we had 9 boats our in a 20+ kts blow. It was good to see 2 equally sized PHRF fleets (four PHRF 1 and five PHRF 2 boats) racing plus the usual Shark "pack". As a result of the better PHRF fleet split, we able to give each fleet good long races on both nights. Again, remember, the water is very cold, so be really careful out there.

Arcchit ("Archie") is getting up to speed as our new Race Management Coordinator. He has quickly mastered the dark arts of Orange Peel operation and wrestled with the Sailwave software for results processing. If you get a chance, please introduce yourself to him.

Big thanks to John Vines and his work crew for getting our racing marks deployed early this year. Additional thanks to John for re-positioning some of the marks after they were blown off their proper locations by the 50+ kts blow last week.

Ryan and Carolyn Heath are reaching out to Cruising fleet about this summer's events and they are planning a Awards Night Dinner for sometime in June. Details to follow...

Radio Controlled also kicked off their racing this week: IOM boats (4) on Monday and Dragon Force 65's (2) on Wednesday. Thus Saturday at 1 pm there will be a Dragon Force 65 boat building "party". There are 4 more DF 65 boats, bringing fleet size to a total of 8. This is an exciting development in racing at KYC! If you are a former racer missing the thrill or new to sailing and interested in learning how to sail a boat at low cost ($250), radio controlled sailing/racing might be for you.

Reminder: Please check the online Race Committee Duty Calendar to see your duties and to sign up for particular slots. Each racing boat is required to perform 2 duties (weeknight or weekend) per year. There are still some 5 duty slots available in June. On June 1, the Race Office will assign any unfilled duty slots to racing boats as needed.

Reminder: we have post race arbitration as an option for handling protests. The first 2 races have been clean (i.e. no protests) but that won't last forever. If you feel you have fouled out there, you still need to fly a protest flag, hail the other competitor and (on shore) file a protest form. After that you may request arbitration or a (protest) hearing.
