| Message from the General Manager

May is here, which means we are getting busier by the day! And because of this, I would like to remind (update) everyone on some activities of the Club.

We are now open seven (7) days a week with our opening hours being 11.30 am (Mon - Fri) and 10am on weekends with closing hours at 8pm (volume of business may dictate closing earlier or remaining open later). We would appreciate a "heads up" if your party is 5 or more. With water levels rising daily, we anticipate our outdoor patio to once again being compromised to the higher water and we will adjust accordingly.

Brad is still in the process of organizing some issues we have with mooring balls etc., and our plan is to have this completed by end of next week. Our plan is also to have all pavement "power" swept and cleaned off before we begin to accept dry moorings. I will update everyone in next weeks knotmeter.

Please review our monthly calander for updates of Club events and activities (which include Mother's Day Reservations, and a few Member Celebrations of Life).

| Launch - Thank you

Thanks to our steady volunteers.

Were it not for chilly weather and the occasional spit of wind driven snow, Saturday’s launch would have been picture perfect. Nevertheless, our volunteers rose to the occasion, as usual, and made quick work of the launching of many boats and new ramps. Sunday chased Saturday with much nicer weather and a good day to step masts.

We did ask for the crane to arrive at 0730 so that we could get a jump on things. Ahem… we started with the new 22’ finger dock, which fit perfectly, followed by the new 20’ square, hinged dinghy ramp which too, fit perfectly, and finally the old re/re finger. Pleased to report to all members that these two new components of our harbour infrastructure are installed and will be in use by early next week. A bit of tweaking to do on the floatation, but we are very pleased with the outcome so far. The new ramp will be a quantum leap in the quality of our facility. permitting greater and faster access for our JS sailors. Kudos to Brad and staff for doing a fine job of not only building the new “bits”, but coordinating their installation so efficiently. Our north shore is now almost totally renovated!

Once the new “bits” were installed we proceeded to the boats, a process that now seems predictable and efficient. We had all the ramps, boats and T dock in the water by about 330 (I think). Volunteer beer and chili provided by KYC. So, thanks to the following (and I hope I have all the helpers…I’ll gladly write an addendum if I’ve forgotton or not noticed someone) Serge, Kevin, John (new member), Laura, Mary, Ken, Rick, Graham, Steve, Adam, John, Dave (new member), Ian, Matt (new member), Andrew, Kelley, Rob and Rob, and me, too. Sunday we stepped masts (only 20) and were done by about 230. Thanks to all the slingers, hookers, porters, boat rats, riggers, pushers and pullers, timers, herders and signalmen- everyone contributed to make this a success. I’d like to note that a new member volunteer commented “wow, you guys really know what you’re doing!”, ….'tis true!.

Thanks too, to our wonderfull KYC staff, who plied us with coffee, food and barley sandwiches to get us through the day. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention those who have faithfully contributed in the past. While they were unavailable this year, their help in years past have helped us get to where we are today. They are, Ralph, Mary, Rob, Ronnie, Jim, Daniel, and others too.

And then on WEDnesdayyy, we loaded the cradles. “WE” were John Kitney, Mike Charrette, Andrew Kelm, John Vines, Darwin Muir, Brad, Tristan and I. A job well done, in the face of threatening wind driven rain. Thanks again to all who have pitched in this week! The kind of effort put forth is what helps makes KYC a Club, not a marina!

Now, let’s do some sailing!

| Canada 2019 Blind Fleet Racing World Championship

Greetings from the Kingston Yacht Club!

KYC is pleased to announce that we are hosting the Blind Fleet Racing World Championships from September 1-8, 2019.

World Sailing has appointed KYC as the organizing authority, a rare opportunity for a truly international, world class regatta to be held in the home waters of Kingston’s harbour. Competitors from Europe, the United States, South America and New Zealand are expected - some 25 teams in all!

| KYC Cruisers

Once again John and Karen Kitney will be organizing events around the 12th annual Picton Jazz Festival Cruise (2019), scheduled for the weekend of August 16, 17 and 18.

We are planning to organize a group dinner for Friday night (August 16) and then plan to attend the 8:00 pm Regent Theatre Concert featuring June Bunnett and Maqueque (a 6-woman Cuban rhythm jazz phenom). A limited number of tickets have been pre-purchased for KYC ($42 each) and can be claimed by calling Greg at the club office to have these put on your club account. Additional tickets can also be purchased on-line at https://www.theregenttheatre.org (Select “What’s On” – “Events Calendar” – “Stage” and bear in mind that the good seats are selling quickly – additional on-line charges will apply).

Details for opting into the Friday dinner and any other weekend activities (such as the Saturday night performance of “Every Brilliant Thing” by the Festival Players) will follow as they become available. Dockage will also be arranged for the group. Please contact John Kitney if you are interested in participating in this weekend event, either by boat or by car. The club is looking for any members willing to open their doors to visiting sailors during our busy regatta season this summer. The dates of the regattas are:

| Cruisers Dinner

The Cruisers Dinner was held Saturday to celebrate our cruising lives. Awards: Peter Fedora and Ze Keeping won the 500 NM Flag and the Most Number of Miles Trophy. Brenda Dobbie Charette was awarded The Broken Winch Award for her broken wing incident last spring. Bob Story and Tarja Jaatinen won the Long Distance Award for their cruise to the Bahamas and back.
 

| 29er Sailing Program - Sam Harris

As you may or may not know I’m fundraising to not only purchase a 29er, but also to bring the 29er sailing program back to KYC! I have found a boat to purchase from former 29er and KYC racer. Currently the fundraising is on go fund me https://www.gofundme.com/vwvy3-set-sam-asail, to reach our goal with this small timeline, we need help expanding to new fundraising markets, the KYC members! I think a big selling point is, we only need 225 more people to donate 20$ and we will have reached our goal of sailing a 29er and bringing an amazing program back to KYC. Thank you!

Keelboat racing has started! 10 hearty crews hit the chilly waters to race in what turned out to be a great breeze. Race results: PHRF 1: 1st Shirazu (Davies), 2nd Long Time Running (Hull), 3rd Touch of Class (Cameron); PHRF 2: Twist My Arm (Wilson); Sharks: 1st Shanti (Boyd), 2nd JLS (Van Rossem), 3rd Cariad (Gummer). Our new Sailing Manager Fraser Smith is providing race management services to our volunteer crews until we get some others trained up. Please introduce yourself, if you get the chance.

Copies of the 2019 Sailors Handbook are available behind the bar, in the Race Office, and online.

There are still some Race Committee duty lottery slots available, mostly in July and August. Please sign up soon; you will assigned duty slots at the end of the month. The duty schedule is available online at "Sailing / Race Committee Duties". Email your requests for duty to the Race Office at race@kingstonyachtclub.com.

Last year, many racers found raceqs.com to be entertaining & instructive. It's a way to record your GPS race track during the race and then replay with the tracks from other competitors after the race. iPhone or Android apps are available to do the tracking and the website provides nice viewing, with a variety of visualisation options. It highlights what you and others did right (and sometimes wrong) out there on the race course. Try it out! The more boats that participate the better. We'll start showing the action on screen near the bar after racing...
