OTF Grant Supports Training Programs at KYC

MEDIA RELEASE February, 16,2022

Kingston, ON – In 2021, The Kingston Yacht Club (KYC) received a $117,400 grant from the Government of Ontario’s Community Building Fund - Operating stream. This grant, delivered over 12 months by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, will allow the organization to expand and improve delivery of its Learn to Sail (LTS) programs.

“Congratulations to the Kingston Yacht Club for receiving this Community Building Fund grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation,” said Kingston and the Islands MPP Ian Arthur. “I am happy to hear
that these funds are being put to great use in allowing KYC to increase its reach for instructing through its Learn to Sail programs during this difficult time. I want to thank the KYC for continuing its mission in new ways to encourage enjoyment of our beautiful waters in Kingston and the Islands by sailing, swimming, boating, or yachting.”

In 2020, pandemic restrictions severely limited KYC’s instructional programming capacity. This grant will allow KYC to expand its roster of instructors, rebuild its LTS programs to meet public health guidelines and expand online delivery of these programs.

"The impact of this grant cannot be underestimated,” said Robert Crothers, Commodore of the Kingston Yacht Club. “It will allow us to make improvements in all our LTS programs at KYC. Our Program Manager will be engaged throughout the winter months in reviewing and improving our LTS programs. The grant will also support the efforts of our sailing instructors who provide the individual sport training. Our sailing programs are available for all ages starting with Wet Feet (ages 5-9), Junior Sailing (CanSail Levels 1-5), Race Team, Adventure Sail, Able Sail and Adult Learn to Sail.”

In addition to an updated and improved curriculum, instructors will be equipped with up-to-date, waterproof communication and video equipment that will be used in both on-water and on-shore learning sessions. The teaching classrooms will also be furnished with digital recording and display equipment that will enhance teaching and learning opportunities to broaden the sailing experience.

The LTS facilities are used by a variety of sailing organizations for classes, meetings, celebrations and fundraisers. The Kingston Yacht Club is committed to preserving and improving these facilities and ensuring that they remain accessible for sailing related activities over the course of the year.
