Sail Past

Sailing Instructions

Annually in June

The annual Kingston Yacht Club Sail Past marks the official opening of the Club for the season. This event includes an on-water review of the fleet by the Commodore and Executive Committee, followed by a BBQ dinner. All members (boat owning and non-boat owning, sailor and non-sailor, kayakers, paddle boarders, etc.) are welcome and encouraged to join in on the festivities!

Schedule of Events
Please refer to the KYC Events Calendar for this year's schedule.

On-Water Review of the Fleet
Location
The Commodore, accompanied by the Executive Committee, will review the fleet from the Commodore’s boat (or the boat of another club member). The boat will be anchored about ¼-mile south of the KYC flag pole.

Order and Action of Boats
The Orange Peel will sound 1 long horn to indicate it is leaving the dock. Participating vessels shall proceed on water to the Orange Peel (flying Code Flag Lima shown below) and arrange themselves in single file from smallest to largest vessel. It is up to the members to decide amongst themselves who is smallest and who is largest. The Orange Peel will sound 1 long horn to start the parade, and participating vessels shall then follow the Orange Peel to file past the Commodore. Vessels should make a salute to the Commodore, often consisting of lowering their colours (dipping/lowering their Canadian Flag) or luffing their foresail.

Communications
Monitor VHF Channel 71 for instructions. 1 long horn sounded from the Orange Peel as it leaves the dock, and another 1 long horn sounded  from the Orange Peel shall mark the start of the parade.

BBQ Dinner
After the review of the fleet, vessels may return to their moorings and “dress ship” (decorate the vessel by hoisting lines of flags running its full length). A BBQ dinner will be served by the KYC Kitchen, usually starting at 5:00pm. Reservations in advance are strongly encouraged.

Etiquette
Smart casual (or a little smarter) and/or unity of crew appearance will be appreciated.

Don’t have a boat?
Post your details to the Crew Bank in the Members area of the KYC website if you are without a boat and would like to take part in the on-water portion. Many boat owners will be happy to take you on board!
